Although the elevator is commonly viewed as a convenient means of vertical transportation, it has had a very influential and long lasting impact on society since its first implementation in a public building. However, without the elevator safety brake, invented by Elisha Otis in 1852, that legacy may never have been realized. Otis' invention, while seemingly small, impacts society to this day. The world as we know it would be a different place all together. This webpage explores the elevator safety brake and its overall impact on society.
